Overall power is usually rated in horsepower, but as DC motors can’t technically be rated for horsepower, many manufacturers quote horsepower equivalent or horsepower comparable. For our purposes, they can all be considered the same. Entry-level garage door openers are usually rated 1/2HP but these should by no means be considered under-powered. They will be perfectly good for many standard aluminum garage doors. 3/4HP models are also common. Heavy-duty models might be 1-1/4HP or more. Some manufacturers prefer to quote the weight their opener is capable of lifting. They might also quote a maximum door size, though care is needed here. For example, a solid wood door will be much heavier than an aluminum section door of the same size.
